Bringing Authentic Kimonos to the World—Redefining Tradition with Simplicity

In recent years, foreign tourists wearing kimonos have become a familiar sight. However, we noticed that many of these kimonos were made of polyester, prompting us to investigate further.
Through our research, we identified three key challenges associated with authentic silk kimonos, which are unique, one of a kind garments:
1. They are hard to put on without assistance.
2. The production of a kimono takes a significant amount of time.
3. As crafted of silk, they can be expensive.
We recognized that overcoming these challenges would allow more people worldwide to appreciate the beauty of authentic kimonos with greater ease.
As our research continued, we uncovered even deeper issues within Japan—kimonos are now predominantly worn for formal occasions such as weddings, funerals, and traditional lessons. Moreover, as the population ages, an increasing number of kimonos and obi belts are being discarded.
In response, our project was born from the vision of giving new life to these discarded kimonos by transforming them into an easy to wear, modern kimono style.

The Perfect Balance of Authentic Beauty and Ease—A Kimono Anyone Can Wear

The biggest reason kimonos have faded from daily life is the complexity of wearing them.
For beginners and foreign tourists, the traditional dressing process presents a significant challenge. Additionally, fully customized kimonos require a long production time and are often expensive, making them inaccessible for many.
To address these issues, we sought to create a solution that allows more people to experience authentic kimonos effortlessly.
After a year of trial and refinement, we developed a separate kimono design that can be worn in just five minutes.
By repurposing antique pure silk kimonos destined for disposal, we have preserved their traditional beauty while introducing a modern, functional design that makes dressing easy for anyone.
We hope this fusion of tradition and innovation will bring the beauty of Japan to more people around the world.

Project Objectives

Preserving Japanese Tradition for Future Generations

We became increasingly aware of a pressing issue—the fate of beautifully crafted kimonos left unused and ultimately discarded. To safeguard Japan’s rich cultural heritage, we have reimagined kimonos in a way that makes them more accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience.
Embracing the spirit of Mottainai, we strive to pass down the artistry and elegance of Japan to future generations.

Commitment to the SDGs

Through kimono remaking, we are actively reducing waste and ensuring cultural heritage remains sustainable for the future.
By giving discarded kimonos new life, we contribute to "Responsible Consumption and Production," creating meaningful value from materials that would have otherwise been lost.

A Cultural Experience for Global Audiences

By eliminating the difficulty of wearing traditional kimonos, we offer more opportunities for people around the world to experience authentic Japanese attire.
Making kimonos more accessible lowers the barriers to traditional dressing, allowing Japan’s rich cultural heritage and timeless beauty to reach a global audience.
